Carp Line & Leaders for Utah Lake (Braid vs Mono, Simple Sizes)
A simple guide to line choices for Utah Lake carp: braid vs mono, leader sizes, and reliable brands with Amazon links.
A simple starting point
- Main line: 20–30 lb braid (or 12–20 lb mono)
- Leader: 15–25 lb mono/fluoro, 12–18 inches
- Why: strong enough for long runs + cheap to re-tie
Braid (recommended for most people)
Braid casts well, has great sensitivity, and lets you pull fish away from weeds. Use a mono/fluoro leader to add a little stretch and abrasion resistance.
Mono (simplest, cheapest)
Mono is forgiving (stretch helps) and is great if you’re learning knots or snagging a lot.
Quick knot tip
If you use braid main line + leader, look up the FG knot or double uni knot and practice it once at home. It’s worth it.
